A label printer should be selected around the application and the media

Print volume, label width, label material, adhesive, ribbon, resolution, environment, connectivity, software, barcode density, and how often users load media all affect the right Zebra configuration. A compact desktop unit can be ideal for shipping or asset labels, while an industrial printer is built for long shifts, larger rolls, faster throughput, and demanding production environments.

Featured Zebra Models

ZD421 for everyday desktop labeling. ZT610 for industrial production.

These two models illustrate the difference between a flexible 4-inch desktop printer and a rugged high-throughput industrial platform.

Where Zebra Fits

Choose the printer class around the job

Shipping & receiving

Print carrier labels, carton labels, routing labels, return labels, and receiving identifiers close to the point of work.

Inventory & asset tracking

Produce barcode labels for bins, equipment, shelves, components, and serialized assets that need reliable scanning.

Manufacturing & warehouse

Industrial models are designed for longer duty cycles, larger media rolls, faster throughput, and demanding environments.

Retail, healthcare & specialty

Zebra platforms can support price labels, wristbands, receipts, tags, healthcare applications, and specialty media depending on the selected model and configuration.

Direct thermal or thermal transfer?

Thermal transfer uses a ribbon to transfer the image onto the label. It adds a consumable, but it opens the door to more durable materials and image longevity. The right combination depends on how long the label must remain readable and what the label will be exposed to.

  • Direct thermal — simple, ribbon-free printing for appropriate short- to medium-life labels
  • Thermal transfer — ribbon-based printing for more durable label constructions
  • Match ribbon chemistry to the label face stock
  • Confirm adhesive for cardboard, plastic, cold storage, curved surfaces, or other applications
  • Choose resolution based on barcode density, font size, and label dimensions

Discuss your label application

The label matters as much as the printer

  • Label size
  • Adhesive
  • Ribbon
  • Barcode density
  • Environment

Software, printer languages, and connectivity are part of the selection

Industrial models such as the ZT610 add a platform designed for continuous production environments. The right interface may be USB, Ethernet, serial, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or a combination depending on printer configuration and the system generating the label.

  • ZPL compatibility for established Zebra label formats
  • EPL support on applicable desktop configurations
  • Zebra DNA software and management tools
  • USB standard on ZD421; network and wireless options vary by configuration
  • Industrial connectivity should be selected around the host system and deployment environment

Zebra label-printer buying questions

What is the difference between the ZD421 and ZT610?
The ZD421 is a compact 4-inch desktop printer for everyday labeling. The ZT610 is an industrial platform designed for heavier production, larger media rolls, faster throughput, and more demanding duty cycles.
How fast is the ZD421?
Zebra lists up to 6 inches per second for 203 dpi ZD421 models and up to 4 inches per second for 300 dpi models.
How fast is the ZT610?
Zebra lists up to 14 ips at 203 dpi, up to 12 ips at 300 dpi, and up to 6 ips at 600 dpi for the ZT610.
Should I use direct thermal or thermal transfer?
Direct thermal avoids ribbon and is convenient for appropriate short- to medium-life labels. Thermal transfer uses ribbon and is better suited to applications that need more durable print or specialty label materials.
Can One Source Imaging help with labels and ribbons too?
Yes. We can help match the printer, label construction, adhesive, ribbon, roll size, resolution, and workflow to the application.
